Business Owner? Really, Me? Nah
Many veterans frequently express this common sentiment when initially asked about considering the prospect of business ownership. Regardless of whether you have personally contemplated this avenue, it’s essential to acknowledge that the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) at Syracuse University has commendably established an impressive and diversified array of programs specifically designed to wholeheartedly and effectively support veterans in achieving Empowering Veteran Entrepreneurship Success in their diverse post-military pursuits.
As we have underscored in our previous posts, IVMF proudly boasts four major programs that significantly aid veterans as they navigate their post-military journey: Entrepreneurship, Career Training, Community Services, and Higher Education. For the context of this particular post, our focused lens zooms in on the program that serves as the guiding beacon for aspiring business owners, propelling them towards the realization of their cherished dreams: the Entrepreneurship program.
This program empowers veterans through three crucial facets: Ideation, Start-Up, and Growth & Resources. Each of these categories exerts significant influence on business outcomes, and IVMF has designed specialized programs to guide veteran entrepreneurs through each stage.
Embarking on the journey of entrepreneurship and establishing a business commences with Ideation. This program segment addresses the conception and development of business concepts. IVMF evaluates these concepts, equipping veterans with fundamental knowledge to formulate effective business plans. These skills are fostered through diverse courses.
One such impactful course is “Boots to Business,” a 2-day no-cost program available to service members and their spouses. This pivotal course offers a comprehensive overview of business fundamentals, while its primary focus lies in assisting participants in assessing their innovative ideas’ viability and refining them for optimal effectiveness.
Another course, “Ignite,” uniquely caters to female veterans and military spouses, addressing an underrepresented group in entrepreneurship. This program passionately supports women in their ambitious entrepreneurial pursuits, providing resources, nationally recognized speakers, and business experts.
Moving to the second facet of the Entrepreneurship program, our focus shifts to the pivotal Getting Started phase. In this phase, three cornerstone programs emerge Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans (EBV), Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans Families (EBV-F), and Veteran Women Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship (V-WISE).
Specifically tailored for post-9/11 veterans with honorable discharge, the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans (EBV) stands as a cost-free and invaluable initiative. This transformative program comprises an array of distinct courses, each meticulously curated to empower veterans and pave their path toward entrepreneurial success.
- Phase I (a 90-day online fundamentals course)
- Phase II (a 9-day residency experience course)
- Phase III (a 12-month business creation course)
Participants undergo transformative entrepreneurial training, seamlessly integrating into a vast, dynamic network of veteran professionals and community entrepreneurs.
Delving further into EBV, known as the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans and their Families (EBV-F), significantly enriches resource access for both veterans and their families. This expansion not only widens outreach but also considerably amplifies impact. The program places a clear emphasis on the strategic utilization of essential skills, effectively fostering both education and adept management of small businesses. Through this forward-looking approach, the program actively nurtures business growth while harmoniously aligning with the intricacies of family dynamics.
Similarly, the Veteran Women Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship (V-WISE) aligns with Ignite’s goals by supporting women veterans and their partners. V-WISE equips women with passion discovery, real-world entrepreneurial skills, and a strong community of local and global women veteran entrepreneurs.
The final category of the Entrepreneurship program revolves around Growth and Resources, targeting business owners aiming for the next level. EBV Accelerate, Veteran EDGE, and VetSOURCE stand as pillars supporting veteran entrepreneurs.
EBV Accelerate is a program for veteran business owners. It focuses on skills for growth and success. The three-phase approach includes analysis, crafting plans, and enhancing resource access, while understanding impact.
Advancing further, VeteranEDGE offers a transformative 4-day immersive experience. It fosters robust networks and relationships among diverse entrepreneurs and alumni.
In this dynamic environment, business owners access opportunities, resources, and industry best practices. Equally significant, VetSOURCE , a networking event, draws professionals into discussions and unique connections, fueling growth.
